An individual facing hair loss that ultimately developed into baldness on his/her head is taken in Operation Theatre (OT) for graft collection first. His/her hairs are shaved leaving only one to three mm in length by one of the hair transplant team. Under local anesthesia manual or robotic hair punches are used to collect hair grafts from donor parts of the individual. The hair grafts are kept in fridge in different petri-dishes with antibiotic solution. An expert hair transplant surgeon generally pulls out grafts in such a manner that density of hairs should not be affected and it does not show hair thinning there. Usually one graft is extracted out of a group of five to six hairs. Hair Graft collection and its transplant is really very meticulous job for the surgeon. It requires proper attention and care. This often takes around two hours of time for the graft collection.
The next step, transplantation of the grafts, is done after its counting. The counting is required to estimate the cost of the procedure being done. Requirement of grafts is different in different hair loss facing people. The surgery is very less invasive and patient going under it never feels pain though punches and tiny incisions made on his/her head. It generally takes 2 to 4 hours to transplant around four thousand grafts. Some medicines and antibiotics are prescribed to be taken after the surgery. If a person facing too much baldness then the surgery takes two sessions on two consecutive days.
The surgery produces fruitful results within four weeks. As hairs of the patient are trimmed during the surgery, it takes 3 to 4 months to develop a perfect hairstyle with 3 to 4 inches long hairs on head. Other surgeries to transplant hairs including beard, mustaches, eyebrows, and eyelashes take time according to area of hair loss. Moreover, the surgery is also effective to perform several cosmetic procedures that require transfer of hairs to save the styles of natural hairs.
